Sadly, we have begun the new year with a spate of new infections in our homes. The newer strain of the Coronavirus has taken hold fast, with the infection spreading at a rapid rate once it enters our homes. Since the start of the pandemic in South Africa, we have recorded a total of 144 Covid positive cases among elders and staff. Our worst nightmare has just come true. Yesterday, one of our residents at Langeler Towers tested positive for Covid-19. For over 600 elderly men and women who live here – and in the adjacent John Conradie House – it is devastating news. Everyone is aware that this is the age group most at risk from the disease. Data from China on the first 44 000 Coronavirus patients showed that the death rate in those aged 80 and over is nearly 15%, and 8% among those aged 70 to 79.
