New residential complex for the elderly launched

Just launched by Tafta, Barns Cottages ia a newly-renovated complex on the Berea, offering senior citizens spacious independent units to let.

A much sough-after alternative to traditional old age homes, the complex provides an ideal environment for Durban’s elderly to continue living independently and securely while remaining an active part of the community.

Centrally located in the Essenwood area, the cottages offer easy access to public transport, shopping complexes, restaurants and hospitals. The historic Haden Road building, which dates back 127 years, was developed when a former Durban-based businessman, Robert John Barns, made provision in his will for these cottages to be built as a means of accommodation for “widows of tradesmen”. The buildings were donated to Tafta by The Barns Trust and have undergone extensive renovations to bring them right up to date.

There are six one-bed and six two-bed units, with spacious lounges, well-fitted kitchens with granite counter tops and fully tiled showers and toilets. Designed for independent Living, the one bedroom cottages rent for R6500 per month.  The 2 bed cottages rent for R7850 and also have an enclosed secure courtyard at the rear, which means that the tenant may have a single small dog as a companion! 24-hour security and a garden service are included in the rental. Secure parking is charged at R275 , electricity and water is separately metered.

Tafta further offers a full Ageing in Place package, which includes essential services such as meal delivery, cleaning service, hiring of assistive devices, provision of caregivers and a handyman as required by tenants.

After their children have grown up and moved away, many older people look for affordable new homes that do not compromise on space, quality, or convenience. Tafta Barns Cottages responds to the housing needs of middle-income pensioners, who have sufficient money to live on after retirement but cannot afford to buy a property.
