Former Miss India SA runner up, Aishwariya Bedessy, will be at the annual Tafta Trail Run. The 22 year old final year Environmental Management student, was so touched by Tafta’s mission, that she contacted us to offer support as a volunteer.

“I’ve always had a soft spot for elders, whom I believe have paved the way for the younger generation,” said Aishwariya who described her time spent with elders as an emotional experience.

“They crave conversation, and who best to afford them that than the younger generation.”

Aishwariya has challenged KwaZulu-Natal’s youth to join her in support of the Trail Run on Sunday, November 19 at Virginia Bush Nature Reserve.

“Tafta welcomes youth participation and interaction with our elders,” said Gail Samuels, Divisional Manager, Income Development and Marketing.

“If we can improve the standing of older adults in society, and their contribution through intergenerational connections, then we can achieve a better community with a better quality of life for all ages,” she said.

“We divide our communities and our activities by age – young people in schools, older people in retirement communities or facilities. We talk a lot about all the ways we need to help older people. But, perhaps, the old can help us. It’s the experience of life in a multigenerational, interdependent, richly complex community that, more than anything else, teaches us how to be human,” added Samuels who urged more youngsters to start conversations with Tafta.

“I would also like to see more of our youth coming out in support of our Trail Run event. It’s a wonderful starting point of becoming more involved with Tafta.”

All proceeds from the Trail Run will contribute towards providing a three course meal for Tafta elders during the festive period. Participants are also asked to bring along a toiletry item for Tafta’s needy pensioners as part of our Christmas campaign.

Participants can choose 4km at a cost of R50 or 8km at a cost of R80. Pre-registration is at www.roag.co.za or www.wardevents.co.za and on-the-day registration starts from 5:45am. The race is scheduled to begin at 7am from Virginia Preparatory School.
