We are so appreciative of the many messages of support we’ve received during this difficult time of National Lockdown. Thank you to everyone who has acknowledged the efforts made by our dedicated staff to ensure the safety of elders in our care. Neil Green wrote: “Those of us at home, we feel like we are making sacrifices. And we are – we can’t do the things we want to do and some of us are losing money here or there. But the sacrifice you are making is on another level. […]

We’ve got lockdown covered!

By: | Tags:

No sooner had President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the imminent National Lockdown, than our elders swung into action! At Kings Hall and Lucas Gardens, Sheila Rice, Freda Cassim, Doreen Paul, Eleanor Bremmer, Theresa Naidoo and Maureen Chendria pulled out their sewing machines and set to work with a will, creating colourful face masks for every single fellow resident. Ladies of Langeler Towers and John Conradie House decided to make material shopping bags for fellow residents, to eliminate the ubiquitous single use plastic bags. Fabric for all these items was donated to […]

Thank you to these Helping Hands

Many caring sponsors, organisations, public figures and generous individuals have come to our aid during this past week. Our appeal for essential food and hygiene products was met with the kindest response from generous donors. These contributions will positively impact the lives of our elders and care workers currently in Lockdown within our 13 homes, and inspire a life worth living by eliminating feelings of helplessness, boredom and depression. We offer our sincere gratitude and appreciation to all who have contributed toward sustaining the care of the elderly community, including: […]

Lockdown Diaries

“Sad to say, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused chaos worldwide; we are not alone in this time of crisis. Restricting visitors keeps us safe since us elderly are most prone to diseases and lots of folk are chronically ill. It is difficult though as all our social activities are non existent now. Visiting friends and family and neighbours has come to an abrupt halt. Even shopping is restricted. All our fun activities have stopped and life is lonely for many. Fortunately some of our homes have halls where we are […]

Easter under Lockdown

Easter at Tafta

By: | Tags:

As we commemorated the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ in Lockdown this year, we were reminded of the universal message of Easter. Firstly, the message of hope and love. During a worldwide pandemic, the best way to love and care for others is to keep your distance. By adhering to the regulations set by our government, we can reduce the spread of COVID-19. The second message of Easter is that, without suffering nothing new can be achieved. This is a time for us all to learn and grow, […]

Vusi Khumalo of SABC News reported that as the number of infections and deaths rise, so too does anxiety and fear. Globally, senior citizens remain one of the most vulnerable groups, especially those with underlying health conditions. According to medical research, the reserve capacity of lungs in older people is not as good as that of young people. This puts them at a high risk of contracting Covud-19. Retirement homes have put measures in place to ensure their safety. “They are scared, and you have to acknowledge that. Throughout the […]

Working from home

New reality of working under lockdown

By: | Tags: , ,

Three weeks ago, it all sounded like it might be quite fun, didn’t it? Working from home on your laptop during the national lockdown. No stressful commute to work. And for those not required to pitch up for Skype meetings, the lure of lying around in your PJs all day. Bliss! And just think how much you could get done in these few weeks away from the office! Finally, some quiet time to set goals and plan strategy for the rest of the year. Maybe brush up on skills with […]
