Meet some of our residents
At age 84 Audrey Matthews (pictured above centre) is still going strong as a volunteer for the Mary Asher Service Centre.
She has been a resident of Kings Hall since 2000 - and before that, lived at Hollywood Court, which belonged to Tafta.
Audrey has been a Tafta volunteer for 25 years, and feels that the people at Mary Asher are her family. Apart from working in the club, she is also a musician and plays the organ together with a friend of hers who plays the drums. They’ve entertained many of the club members with their music. Audrey also organized a lot of the dances at Mary Asher - which were enjoyed by many people!
In her 40's Audrey and her husband travelled through Africa on their bicycles with their camping gear. One of the nicest memories of that time were when they stayed with a farmer in Baragwanath for six weeks.
Audrey was a widow for 16 years, when she met Noel King, the love of her life. They continued to organize and enjoy the dances at Mary Asher. Both of them wanted to buy a mirror ball for the club, but never got around to it. When Noel passed away, Audrey bought a silver ball in memory of Noel – so his memory lives on in the club.
In her working days she worked at the Museum Services in Pilgrim's Rest and then in Port Elizabeth and many other places.
