Meals on Wheels

If you cannot manage to cook for yourself, a ready-to-eat midday meal – consisting of soup, main course and desert – can be delivered to your home, Monday to Friday.

Where essential, special arrangements can be made to cover the weekend.

A nominal charge, based on income, is made for Meals on Wheels.

Lunches at very affordable prices are also served at the following service centres:

Cook 'n Care

Catering for Meals on Wheels and other TAFTA facilities is provided by Cook 'n Care, an ultra modern processing unit in Falcon Park, New Germany.

The unit, which opened in January 1997, is managed by a six-star caterer with over twenty years' experience in the planning and preparation of quality, low cost catering – supported by skilled chefs, trained kitchen staff and state-of-the-art technology.

Cook 'n Care caters for standard western meals as well as vegetarian and eastern Halaal meals – all planned to ensure daily dietary requirements are met. The menu varies over a six week cycle, creating a large variety of meal combinations.

The facility currently produces
60 000 meals monthly, with the capacity to
increase to 200 000 – delivered daily to TAFTA and other welfare organisations in refrigerated vehicles. In future, we hope to serve retirement homes, boarding establishments and company canteens.

Welfare organisations, schools, etc are invited to contact Cook 'n Care on tel. 031 705-6661 for more information about this service. Catering for corporate events is also undertaken.

One of our aims is to set up and maintain a reliable Feeding Scheme for the many under privileged children in our province who start their day without a meal.  Should you be interested in becoming a Sponsor for this scheme please contact us on +27 31 705 7734 or +27 31 705 7739.  Alternatively you can fax us on +27 31 705 6862 or contact Debbie at debbiec@tafta.org.za.

On a smaller scale we would like to start a feeding scheme within the school infrastructure, whereby more affluent children make monthly donations towards meals for their less fortunate peers.

Putting learners in touch with the schools benefitting from their kindness will help create a culture of social awareness among our youth.  For more information, please contact us.

Volunteer 'hoppers' needed

You don't need a driver's licence or cooking ability – just a little free time in the morning, willing feet and a cheerful smile.

As a Meals on Wheels 'hopper', you are driven to our elderly clients' homes, where you 'hop' out of the van with your basket containing the day's meal, sealed in plastic containers.

A friendly greeting as you deliver the food and collect yesterday's containers is all you need.

If you want to help keep this vital service going, please call the Meals on Wheels coordinator now on +27 31 332-3721.
