What is a bequest?

A bequest is simply a gift that is stipulated in a Will, that goes to the recipient following the death of the person who made the Will.

Bequests are traditionally made to family members, friends, employees and charities, and make take any of the following forms:

  • A specific sum of money
  • A percentage of the estate
  • The residue, or a percentage of the residue, of the estate (the part that is left after all other obligations and bequests have been paid)
  • The total estate after all testamentary expenses, funeral costs, taxes and admin fees have been paid
  • Fixed assets (real estate, stocks and shares)
  • A specific item (jewellery, artworks, antiques, motor vehicles)
  • The proceeds of a life insurance policy

How do I make a bequest to TAFTA?

To ensure the correct legal wording is used, and the most appropriate form of bequest is chosen, it's best to seek the advice of a suitably qualified professional – your lawyer, banker or whoever holds your current Will. If the change to your Will is a small one, they will probably arrange for a Codicil to be added, rather than writing a complete new Will.

If you would like further information about leaving a bequest to TAFTA, please write to our Bequest Liaison Officer at:

P O Box 2983
Durban
4000

Or telephone (031) 332-3721.

If you have already included a gift to TAFTA in your Will, or are planning to do so, please let us know. Your gift is of great value to us and we would sincerely like to thank you personally.

A bequest in your Will can help fund an old age home that will enable us to care for hundreds of elderly folk in the years ahead.

Thanks for helping TAFTA help elderly people in need of care.
